Plastic Free July is here!

One of the biggest challenges our communities face today is the presence of single-use plastic that eventually find their way into our landfills. Scientists and environmental groups have not found a solution to dispose of single-use plastic properly, and so plastic packaging will continue to be a problem for generations to come. 

Environmental Impact of Plastics

Some of the issues of single-use plastic exist in its overall environmental impact. The production process of single-use plastic products causes harm to the environment from the beginning. Many of the materials used to make plastic are non-biodegradable, which means that even these products accumulate in landfills or the environment. Scientific data shows that the global waste generation correlates with the gross national income per capita, so more developed countries consume more single-use plastic waste products.  

More than 300 million tons of plastic are produced each year, and 50% of this is the production of single-use plastic/packaging. The graph below comes from a study conducted in 2017 on the product lifetime of plastic produced for different sectors:  

We assumed lognormal distributions with means ranging from less than 1 year, for packaging, to decades, for building and construction (Fig. 1).

We can see that Packaging has the highest consumption rate in the first year of its production, and disposed of in the same period, this is followed by the manufacturing of Consumer & institutional products, which have a longer lifetime than Packaging. The graph also shows that Industrial machinery and Building and construction plastic products are used for decades.

Health Impact of Plastic

With the environmental impact of single-use plastic come the dangers that the product poses to our community’s health. Plastic debris has been found in all major oceans and has contaminated freshwater supplies as well. A study conducted in 2016 showed the presence of microplastic in the Southern Hemisphere oceans. The presence of microplastic in our oceans has resulted in these fragments’ presence in the fishes that we consume.

Plastic Free July

Plastic Free July is a movement that started in Australia and has spread across the globe. The campaign aims to promote a plastic-free lifestyle by highlighting the simple steps that individuals and companies can take to reduce and even eliminate single-use plastic waste.
